Oregon Congressman Kurt Schrader, who represents the state’s fifth district, was one of only two Democrats to vote against a bill that would increase COVID-19 relief operations from $ 600 to $ 2,000.
On Monday, Schrader spoke in the House Hall against HR 9051, Also known as the CASH Act, and described it as “an ineffective and poorly directed approach to helping Americans in distress.”
“It is clearly a last-minute political maneuver by the president and the extremists on both sides of the political spectrum who have largely been absent during months of very difficult negotiations,” Schrader said.
He and Daniel Lipinski were from Illinois they are Only two Democrats Who did not support the bill. President Donald Trump has called for additional help.
It passed 275-134 – with 231 Democrats and 44 Republicans voting for it, 130 Republicans who voted against and 21 Republicans who did not. Independents also voted against the measure.
By law, Americans who earned $ 75,000 or less in 2019 will be eligible to receive $ 2,000 One-time payment. Spouses who report average gross income of up to $ 150,000 will have $ 4,000 (a couple’s maximum income is $ 112,500 for the highest income or head of household).
Schrader criticized the approach, saying, “People who make six-figure incomes (and) are not affected by COVID-19 do not need to be tested.”
The bill is now heading to the Republican-controlled Senate, where the outcome is uncertain.
Schrader’s full comments on the House floor:
“I wake up today to speak against the law of criticism.
This is an ineffective and poorly targeted approach to helping Americans in distress. It is clearly a last-minute political maneuver by the president and extremists on both sides of the political spectrum who have largely been absent during months of extremely difficult negotiations. They have chosen to tweet their views rather than come to the negotiating table to provide assistance in the hands of the Americans and the small businesses that need it most.
“ Over the past six months, and especially in the past few weeks with holidays approaching and the number of coronavirus cases soaring, my problem-solving conference has worked with senators on both sides of the corridor and the House and Senate leadership to draft legislation that includes vetted programs such as purchasing power parity. And unemployment compensation that has been improving since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I feel all those struggling today because of financial distress and look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on a bipartisan basis to continue to look for ways to help provide relief.
“People who are making a six-figure income (and) unaffected by COVID-19, they don’t need tests. We’ve had nine months to fix this program, to get it to the people who need it most, and that hasn’t happened. Let’s turn the track and target the needy. “.
District Five in Oregon includes all of Marion, Polk, Lincoln and Tillamock Counties, most of Clackamas County and small parts of Multnomah and Benton counties.
